subdani 12/06 19:02 Hello Teddy Raye nice to meet you

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:04 Ah, well. I suppose I’d like to begin by thanking you all for being here, and to thank you for inviting me. I am a writer of BDSM romance and suspense. I was asked here this evening to talk about writing and publishing BDSM and D/s fiction. And I’m open to any and all questions!

little dragon 12/06 19:04 Teddy Raye hello, nice to meet you.

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:04 Hello little dragon!

desphiria 12/06 19:04 Teddy Raye Helllo, nice to meet you!

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:04 And you, desphiria!

kissa 12/06 19:05 Teddy, thank you so much for being here!

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:05 kissa! Thank you.

Master HidoiKaeru 12/06 19:06 OK i would like to ask everyone to now give Teddy your attention

kissa 12/06 19:06 I”ve known Teddy for several years and she is an AMAZING writer.

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:07 Our internet has been down most of the day – it was touch and go if I would be able to join you. Thankfully the gods of the ether prevailed (otherwise known as the AT&T blokes)

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:07 Thank you, kissa. It’s been my absolute joy to write about the things that mean so much to me, and to have such a positive response to them.

kissa 12/06 19:08 Teddy joined us last year to talk about her first novel The Doctor and is joining us now to chat more about her series! She is a D/s lady and we’re lucky to have her

kissa 12/06 19:08 Would you please start out by telling us what Her Minder is about?

chrissa 12/06 19:09 I love BDSM novels, so excited to meet you Teddy Raye

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:10 Certainly! Her Minder is a story that combines my two favourite things: D/s relationships, and hurt/comfort. It’s the story of Sydney Chapin, who is an agent with the British government, and Dahlra Gar, who becomes her Minder, a special envoy within the agency.

kissa 12/06 19:10 (I’ve read the first book, it’s amazing)

kissa 12/06 19:11 Teddy, would you please give us a cue what we can expect?

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:11 Because I’m so crap at synopsis, I hope you’ll indulge me by allowing me to give you the official blurb.

kissa 12/06 19:11 heh

kissa 12/06 19:11 sounds perfect

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:11 When a fact-finding mission goes wrong, Special Agent Sydney Chapin is thrown into prison behind enemy lines. There, she encounters The Doctor, a mysterious physician who wields both drugs and seduction to entice her into revealing her mission.

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:11 After a harrowing rescue, Sydney returns to England, where The Agency has decided to award her a Minder: a vetted envoy responsible for meeting all the needs of their charges.

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:12 As the first female agent to receive such an honour, Sydney has no intention of turning it down-until she discovers Her Minder is none other than her chief tormentor, The Doctor. As the lure of an old case resurfaces, Sydney quickly learns there is much more to Dr Dahlra Gar than meets the eye.

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:12 Together, their journey will take them from the manor of England’s most famous Dominatrix, to the underground lair of Elwess Talbert, a compelling, sensual Dominant, who has his own hidden agenda where Sydney is concerned.

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:12 , Her Minder will quickly draw you into a world of Dominance and submission, espionage and suspense, trust and redemption.

desphiria 12/06 19:13 That books sounds amazing!

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:13 Thank you! It is now available as an Audiobook, and my reader, Evan Harris, has done the most incredible job of bringing this story to life.

BlondieB 12/06 19:13 I just bought it on Amazon

Song Yung 12/06 19:14 seems like ill intentions swirl around the lovely Agent Syndney!

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:14 Thank you! I have also just published the second book in the series, The Chine. It’s so hot off the press I’ve got scorch marks from it.

Song Yung 12/06 19:15 first aid burn lubricant is best! (chuckles)

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:15 What I really wanted to write was a sub who epitomises the strength and control of submission.

desphiria 12/06 19:15 Ooooo

desphiria 12/06 19:15 I has to try and get that and listen to its

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:16 I also wanted to write a Dom with romance, so Dr Gar is definitely a romantic figure, but within the bounds of his Dominance, he is very much a Daddy Dom. Elwess, on the other hand, is a different kettle of fish altogether.

desphiria 12/06 19:16 Daddy Doooom!

desphiria 12/06 19:16 WOooott!

desphiria 12/06 19:16 I REALLY gotta find and read it nows

Song Yung 12/06 19:17 from the sounds of it, not all that seems on the surface of Elwess

kissa 12/06 19:17 *smiles*

Master HidoiKaeru 12/06 19:17 desphiria shhhhh quietly please

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:17 I wrote him much edgier, a bit more coarse, and very much in charge. At at moment. In Book two, things change very much for the trio, and it’s the quiet Doctor who really steps up and takes charge of the three of them.

kissa 12/06 19:18 A different kettle of fish?

kissa 12/06 19:18 oh, got it

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:19 Writing this and other stories involving BDSM and D/s was, as I think I mentioned my first time here, my way of coping and dealing with a very toxic D/s relationship I was part of several years before. It gave me the chance to grow beyond seeing the lifestyle as destructive and back as what it should be.

kissa 12/06 19:19 Teddy, did anyone specific influence your characters?

little dragon 12/06 19:19 🤗

Song Yung 12/06 19:20 Teddy Raye I am happy to hear you found yourself beyond the toxicity and could find the beauty again. I like the dynamic shifts for you in book 2

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:20 Well, that’s a story! Two things happened to me that influenced me to write this trilogy (did I mention I’m working on book three?) LOL One, I saw a very handsome man seducing a woman on the Tube in London one evening.

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:20 Thank you, Song Yung.

Song Yung 12/06 19:21 is that what led you to write was this dashing man and his manner of seduction?

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:21 The other thing is that I got REALLY into fan fiction about ten years ago. I was talking with a friend who told me about a fanfic in which Severus Snape (yes, we’re talking Harry Potter fanfic) was a very strong Dominant who trains Hermione Granger.

kissa 12/06 19:21 *smiles*

chrissa 12/06 19:21 Oh love Severus Snape 😍

kissa 12/06 19:22 Which was that?

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:22 Song Yung, it did! I actually sort of re-create that moment on the Tube in Her Minder, as my homage to them. I always wondered what happened to them!

Song Yung 12/06 19:23 well he is broody and very much in control of self. I like that a single snippet of time bloomed a full story for you and at the same time allowed a process of healing for you

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:23 The name of the Fanfic was “For The Potions Master’s Amusement”. I have since become good friends with the author, and I often tell her it was the Big Bang for me. I knew then I could heal myself of this toxic relationship with one of my own.

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:24 I realised how nurturing and hopeful this lifestyle could be for me. I had to make it. But I had to understand myself a little better first. Writing taught me more about myself than anything had ever done before.

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:25 I’ve had people tell me that reading some of my work helped them in the same way. THAT’s been the ultimate payoff.

Master HidoiKaeru 12/06 19:25 Teddy Raye would you consider your writing a form of journaling for you?

Song Yung 12/06 19:25 I was about to ask that as a person also once in a very toxic relationship. I took from it a stepping stone in learning of myself too and what I wanted better for self. Has this happened for you too? (that is such a wonderful compliment to receive too!)

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:26 I truly believe it was, Master HidoiKaeru. It allowed me to ‘step out’ of myself. If I could write Sydney Chapin as a strong role model for what I wanted to be, then why couldn’t I become her? She’s better looking, of course, and has a license to kill, but a girl can dream! 😉

esmay 12/06 19:27 Teddy Raye That she can

kissa 12/06 19:28 piffle, you’re gorgeous, Teddy

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:28 Song Yung, I believe every step I have taken, even through that swamp of a relationship, taught me what I truly was and what I wanted to be. I couldn’t submit if I didn’t have the strength of character to understand my submission.

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:28 <3 kissa!

Song Yung 12/06 19:28 kissa, she is talking about the license to kill (laughs)

kissa 12/06 19:29 hey, no judgement

Song Yung 12/06 19:29 Teddy Raye, that has me smile quite a bit to have you feel your inner strength again

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:29 Once Her Minder solidified in my mind, it was almost purely erotica. But I wanted to write and say more. I felt like these characters had more to them. So I totally rewrote the story. And rewrote it. And rewrote it some more.

Master HidoiKaeru 12/06 19:30 thinks to self…..i need a license to kill????…..damnit

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:30 The one you purchased tonight is a very different one from the first edition. I still have it in book form, just to remind me how far I’ve come as a writer and as a sub.

esmay 12/06 19:30 Teddy Raye did you find it helped you each time you wrote it, or was the rewrites hard?

Song Yung 12/06 19:30 oh lovely Teddy Raye!

kissa 12/06 19:31 How did it change?

TLSCP 12/06 19:31 Master HidoiKaeru still upset I had to give Mine up

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:32 I had some help, esmay, in the form of my editor, Jules. She is so very supportive, but when she said, “You can do better,” I knew she was right. Sometimes writing is like flying. It’s effortless and your fingers struggle to keep up with the Muse. Other times, well, trudge would be the proper word for it. But I had the characters in my head now, and in many ways they were driving. I was just the gloves they used to type.

esmay 12/06 19:32 Teddy Raye i like that, about the characters driving

Song Yung 12/06 19:33 lovely imagery

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:33 At the beginning, kissa, it was almost purely erotica. And I was still working out some unresolved issues with my failed relationship. I tended to make the characters behave in ways I knew, not in the ways I knew they SHOULD.

TLSCP 12/06 19:33 after I form the character they take on a life of thier own, after that I just put them in situations and see how they react

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:33 Jules said, “I know you love Dalhra Gar, but he’s behaving badly!” And I realised I was having him relive some old ghosts.

kissa 12/06 19:34 What was he doing?

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:35 So true, TLSCP. My character Elwess, for example, originally had a walk on role. Then his physical appearance changed. Then he was a baddie. Then he changed again, and became an anti-hero. Suddenly, while I was taking a bath, he was now one of the three main characters in the story. He really took over.

kissa 12/06 19:35 i think i remember a journal post about the bath

desphiria 12/06 19:36 That’s so coool

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:36 kissa, he was being a bit too manipulative and isolating her too much. I knew what I wanted him to do and how I wanted him to be, but I was putting him in an old suit. I had to look at him with the fresh eyes of how a D/s relationship is supposed to be, not what I had experienced.

TLSCP 12/06 19:36 unexpected turns make writing fun

kissa 12/06 19:36 *smiles*

esmay 12/06 19:37 It sounds like you really had to dig into your heart time after time for these characters.

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:37 It is what makes writing fun. It’s what makes writing writing, really. Stephen King once said that people just assumed he had control over his characters, but they were actually telling him what to do. It’s a bit of a crazy way of thinking about it but it’s true.

esmay 12/06 19:38 Teddy Raye i have heard him say that about his characters

TLSCP 12/06 19:38 Teddy Raye very true, I have a character in a situation I would have killed the person but she saved him because she saw something redeemable in him.

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:38 esmay, I truly did. In The Chine, something really horrible happens to them, and I had to drag them through a terrible mess. It broke my heart. I would be crying like a baby over it, and my husband would say, “What are you doing to these poor people now?” But conflict is king, as they say, and you have to make them suffer!

desphiria 12/06 19:39 Awwww

esmay 12/06 19:39 Teddy Raye Yep, as painful as it is to write, they do have to suffer. Poor things.

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:40 Bless. But they do get a little breathing room at the end!

chrissa 12/06 19:40 It’s so crazy how characters can steal our hearts. I’ve never written a novel, but I love to read and I love connecting so much to the characters that they feel like a piece of myself.

esmay 12/06 19:40 Are the books HEA?

esmay 12/06 19:41 Not that a book needs to be.

chrissa 12/06 19:41 What is HEA esmay ?

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:42 They do resolve themselves at the end. I can only take so much heartache, but I didn’t want to put them through too much only to wreck my readers at the end. One of the things I did in Book two was touch on a more erotic relationship between Dahlra and Elwess. Up to that point, they had been more focused on Sydney. In The Chine, they eventually realise their feelings and attractions for one another. This was a bit outside my wheelhouse.

esmay 12/06 19:42 Happily Ever After

chrissa 12/06 19:42 thanks

esmay 12/06 19:42 chrissa you’re welcome

desphiria 12/06 19:43 Gooood I need your boookss!

desphiria 12/06 19:43 They sound so compelling!

Song Yung 12/06 19:43 Teddy Raye sometimes life gets messy, how we get up is the difference. I am sure your characters shine in the getting up part

esmay 12/06 19:44 Teddy Raye Teddy Raye do you still find, now working on book three, that you’re still digging in to learn about yourself? Or that you’re not writing more from what you know?

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:44 Song Yung, I think that they try very hard to!

esmay 12/06 19:44 *now instead of not, *blush*

kissa 12/06 19:45 Has the story changed since beginning the new and improved Doctor? As you wrote The Chine?

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:45 What an awesome question, esmay! I think the bit is between my teeth now, and I’m really focusing on telling the rest of the story. But there’s always that little moment when you write something and you think to yourself, holy hell, this is in my head! I didn’t realise I knew/felt/understood this until now.

esmay 12/06 19:46 Teddy Raye That is truly awesome.  That you keep growing to know yourself through them.

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:46 I think it has, kissa. I was proud of The Doctor, and I’m really happy with The Chine. I think the story is driving the erotica and not the other way around now.

esmay 12/06 19:47 Teddy Raye Teddy Raye i love when a book does that, when the erotica drives it, i leave feeling a bit empty.

KnightProtector 12/06 19:47 Teddy Raye that’s a good thing

kissa 12/06 19:48 Teddy, is your Hubs any part of this story? Are any other characters folks you actually know?

Song Yung 12/06 19:48 Now more realization about being scorched… steamier erotica

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:49 Well, I cut my teeth on the erotica to find out what worked well and what didn’t in the writing. Then Fifty Shades came out, and I thought, “I’m going to write it how I know it to be, and talk to a lot of people about their experiences. I consulted with several subs and this amazing Dom I know about things I wasn’t so sure of. My own experiences had been skewed. I was learning all over again.

kissa 12/06 19:49 Bless your sweet heart for doing that

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:50 kissa, there are a few people in the stories that are shamelessly based on people I know! The most obvious is the character of Clara, who is a Domme in England. She is based on a friend of mine, and she’s absurdly proud of the fact. She tells everyone ‘Clara is based on ME!”

kissa 12/06 19:50 awwwwww

kissa 12/06 19:51 (see, now I want to know if I know them)

kissa 12/06 19:51 Teddy Raye, what’s in store for these three folks? Can you tell us?

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:51 TheHubs is really Sydney’s work partner, Garnet. They are so much alike. I have tried to explain Dahlra Gar, but it’s very difficult. I will only say he is my true Muse.

desphiria 12/06 19:51 Awwwwwww

esmay 12/06 19:52 Teddy Raye  love that

kissa 12/06 19:52 (TheHubs is a super awesome man, btw)

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:52 kissa, they are all involved now in the case that originally got Sydney incarcerated. Codename Silverbirch. There are some very dark days ahead for Elwess, and it’s up to our couple to try and solve this case, as well as save Elwess from his worse inclinations.

kissa 12/06 19:53 What’s difficult about describing Dahlra?

kissa 12/06 19:53 That sounds exciting!

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:54 I will also say that the character of Inigo Lightoller (Sydney’s Principal) is named after a real person who is now quite high up in the courts in England. But I based him physically on Jason Issacs.

kissa 12/06 19:54 So, i’m going to be THAT person – when’s the next/last coming to us?

kissa 12/06 19:54 There’s a lot to be said for basing someone on Jason Issacs.

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:54 TheHubs truly is my Minder as well. He saved me in all the important ways. And he’s given me the freedom to test my wings and helped me back up when I came crashing back down to earth.

kissa 12/06 19:55 like I said, awesome

kissa 12/06 19:56 Are you involved in BDSM now, Teddy Raye?

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:56 Book Three – Silverbirch, is in the works right now. TONS of stuff written, and most of it will go on the cutting room floor. But hopefully in the next year or so. I’ve had a lot of angst this year. It’s hard to write angst when you’re living it. TheHubs suffered a series of strokes, and while he’s recovering so well, he’s still a priority of my time.

esmay 12/06 19:57 Teddy Raye i am sorry to hear that, i hope he continues to recover.

kissa 12/06 19:58 That is so understandable. He is doing great and it’s so much your fault.

Teddy Raye 12/06 19:58 At the moment, we are taking things very easy. It’s been so hard on us both to deal with all the physical changes, but we are growing stronger and healthier. I do miss it, and there are times I know I need disciplining and a lot of it. But I also know he will see to my needs when he’s ready. It’s easy for me to forget that while he’s in charge of that and in control of it, it is a physical and mental state for him as well.

esmay 12/06 19:59 Teddy Raye he is very blessed to have you so deeply understand it all. Some wives get very impatient.

kissa 12/06 20:00 That kind of sounds like Domestic Discipline

Teddy Raye 12/06 20:00 I try very hard to be patient. He’s been through a hellish year, and he looks so great I sometimes forget that he still tires more easily than he once did. But we’ve grown stronger and closer than ever because of what we’ve been through. In the meantime, it’s just a joy to have understanding friends, and the support of people who like what I do.

Teddy Raye 12/06 20:01 I’m of the category of little that likes/needs some pretty harsh disciplining, but much comfort after, hence the hurt/comfort themes that are prevalent in my writing.

Teddy Raye 12/06 20:02 Well, I’ve just talked and yacked and yammered on for an hour, and I hope I haven’t worn out my welcome. But thank you all for allowing me to come and talk about writing, BDSM, D/s and everything in between.

kissa 12/06 20:02 That isn’t something that i’ve ever picked up from you. That’s neat.

esmay 12/06 20:02 Teddy Raye You have not overstayed your welcome at all. i loved listening to what you had to share.

Teddy Raye 12/06 20:03 I’m very private about my preferences, not because I worry about what others think (I don’t really), but I just don’t talk about it much.

Master HidoiKaeru 12/06 20:03 Teddy Raye we would love to have you back anytime you wish to come

kissa 12/06 20:03 Teddy Raye, I deeply appreciate your time and energy and openess. Thank you so much for joining us

subbabe31 12/06 20:03 Teddy Raye i enjoyed all of it and would love to be able to read some of your work ❤

traylicious 12/06 20:04 i can’t wait to read your books Teddy Raye

KnightProtector 12/06 20:04 Teddy Raye *bows to your graciousness for tonight

kissa 12/06 20:04 Well, since you just learned about one of my huge raisons d’être, I can’t say much *grins*

esmay 12/06 20:04 Teddy Raye oh, i notice you publish under that, does that mean you self publish?

kissa 12/06 20:05 Master HidoiKaeru, i’m on it

Teddy Raye 12/06 20:05 I do self publish. I found it to be the easiest way to get the books out there. It also means I can keep costs down and sell where I prefer.

esmay 12/06 20:06 Teddy Raye Very interesting, i’m looking at those pros and cons now, it’s a bit daunting

kissa 12/06 20:06 What ARE the pros and cons of it

Teddy Raye 12/06 20:07 It has been a joy to speak to you all. Thank you for your warmth and support and candor. esmay, if you or anyone wants to speak to me privately about anything I’m all ears. And desphiria, apologies I just saw your question. Yes, I’m a little.

TLSCP 12/06 20:07 con are you do not have a huge promotional engine behind your book, pro you get to publish what you write without having to compromise the writing to be “popular”

esmay 12/06 20:07 Teddy Raye i would love to ask you a question or two sometime, i’m almost done my final edit on my first DD/BDSM book *blush*

Cis

I'm Cis, the owner of TheMasque and The Garden at themasque.net. The idea for The Garden at thebdsmgarden.com came from a desire to share an understanding of D/s, BDSM, and Gor with others, both expert and the curious. With the media's mainstreaming of BDSM, I wanted to provide a resource that would offer a reasonable, sane place to earn and form opinions about BDSM and how to do it safely without relying on novels written by authors who don't have actual experience in BDSM and only a half-formed idea about D/s.

  1. Thank you again for such a lovely reception! I am embarrassed that I missed answering a few questions, but if anyone would still like to ask me anything, please drop me a line. I look forward to meeting up with you all again!

    • It was a pleasure to chat with you, Teddy! I know folks appreciated your time and don’t begrudge questions you might have missed. It was a bit of a madhouse! We can’t wait for the next book!
