Gorean Glossary T

Gor is a complex lifestyle based on a series of novels by John Norman featuring a strict caste system of highly trained Free and slaves. For more information, check out the Garden's section on Gor.

Note about this Glossary: items marked with a K are Kassar or Old Gorean, online-created languages used to augment Gorean. Kassar was not created or endorsed by John Norman and is not consistent within the Gorean language or universe. Kassar should be used cautiously and sparingly as many Goreans do not use or approve of the language.

Klima, located far to the east in 'The Wastes' is the location of the infamous salt mines. The major tribes are the Kavars and the Aretai, and their vassal tribes, such as the Char, the Kashani, the Ta'Kara, the Raviri, the Tashid, the Luraz, and the Bakahs. Tahari Ring one of a set of 5 invisibility rings produced by the Kur scientist, Prasdak thousands of years ago. The Tahari ring, given to Tarl Cabot by a Kur ally, was used by him to help him disarm a destructive device from the Steel Worlds which would have destroyed the planet. Cabot gave the ring to Samos, who entrusted it to Shaba, a famed explorer credited with discovering the source of the Ua. Shaba used the ring to aid in his explorations and to entice Cabot to follow him to into the jungle. He needed Cabot to ensure someone would return his many maps and scrolls of exploration to civilized Gor. He died, as he expected, at the source of the Ua River named for him, Lake Shaba. The ring was returned to Cabot by Bila Haruma, after Shaba's death. Book 10: Tribesmen of Gor, pages 285-294 and 303 Book 13: Explorers of Gor, pages 27-34, 431-435, and 449
Taharic the written language of the inhabitants of the Tahari that has a somewhat floral appearance. It differs from standard Gorean, in that it only has four of the nine vowel sounds. The vowel sounds which are represented have tiny marks near them, like accent marks. Vowel sounds which are not explicitly represented, must be inserted by the reader. At one time in Taharic, apparently, no vowel sounds were represented. Some Taharic scholars, purists, refuse to continence vowel signs, regarding their necessity as a convenience for illiterates. Anyone who can read printed Taharic will have no difficulty in following cursive Taharic. The men of the Tahari are content to form their letters carefully and beautifully, being fond of them. To scribble is generally regarded not as proving oneself a swift efficient fellow, but something of a boor, insensible to beauty.

Depending upon the variety of tarn, they are used among the military, in the hauling of goods, and in racing. A powerful bird, the musculature developed for quick take-offs from its perch, rather than a running start as most large birds, the tarn is known amongst its riders, known as tarnsmen, as Brothers of the Wind due most likely to the kindred bond man and beast develop. Such men. with their internal espirit de corps, their identification with their own units, their allegiance to their personal commanders, their status, privileges and skills, their proximity to the delicate fulcrums of power, hold in their hands the power to enthrone and dethrone ubars." Page 245, Mercenaries of Gor

"I had met them in combat, as long ago as the sands of the Stadium of Blades. There is a common myth, given their post in the city, that Taurentians are spoiled and soft. This myth is false. They are elite troops highly trained and devoted to their commanders. One does not gain admittance to their coveted ranks in virtue skills or poor conditions."

"Their captain, when I had known them long ago, had been Saphronicus of Ar. Seremides of Tyros, in these days, had been high general of Ar. He appointed through the influence of Cernus, who was soon to ascend the throne of Ar, had replaced the venerated hem, Maximus Hegesius Quintilius of Ar, who had earlier expressed reservations concerning the investiture of Cernus, a merchant and slaver, in the caste of warriors. Maximus Hegesius Quintilius was later found assassinated in pleasure gardens, slain there by the bite of a chemically prepared poisoned girl, one who killed by Taurentians before she could be questioned. Such an appointment, of course, that one of Tyros to such a post, later would have been unthinkable, given the developing frictions between Ar and Cos, and her mighty ally, Tyros frictions largely consequent upon competitions in the valley of the Vosk. After the defeat of Cernus, so briefly a ubar, I had seen both Saphoricus and Seremides in chains before Marlenus. then again upon the throne. They had both, with other high traitorous officers, been ordered to Port Kar, in chains, to be sold to the galleys.

This permits the men in reserve to move into the forward line to form a solid line, or, if the first line withdraws, to have space to take its place. It allows a great deal of mobility and, on the level of squad tactics, has its affinity to the Torian Squares; the space allows the swordsmen, of course, room in which to handle their weapons, room in which to properly attack or defend themselves; in this case I expected the center man to engage me, defending himself on the whole, while the flanking men would strike; should one of these three fall, of course, his place would be taken by one of the men in the reserve line." - Assassin of Gor, page 343.

Tospit Bush / Tospit Tree A bush which produces the tospit fruit. Okay. So which is it that bears the tospit fruit - a Tospit Bush or a Tospit Tree? It would seem that John Norman made an error. The answer to this question is that it seems that biology again on Gor is irrelevant to earth. The tospit comes in two (2) varieties: the rare, long-stemmed variety, which grows on the tospit bush, indigenous to the dry valleys of the western Cartius, and the common tospit, which grows on tospit trees and are often grown commercially in orchards.
